Do inconvenient things
In 2017 the San Francisco Public Library chose Black Against Empire for their “One City One Book” campaign. A year later I am finally getting around to reading it, and that meant (as it has, for so long) that I reflexively started to add it to my Amazon shopping cart.
I didn’t, though. I made myself do something less convenient and more expensive: I researched black-owned local booksellers, and rang up the Oakland-based Marcus Books to order it from there instead.
It seemed appropriate, all things considered. And it was a very small act in my attempt to be more aware of the consequences of personal convenience. What am I willing to do if I really want independent booksellers to survive?
