i'm just doing my job
“Why are you doing this?” someone asked me today, at the beginning of our conversation. “Why are you reviewing people’s resumes for free?” Suspicion, sure. Merited, sure.
I thought about the question, and then I gave a good enough answer – it is important to me that the media and tech ecosystems become less homogeneous; it is easier for me as a hiring manager if more people who I might otherwise miss make themselves visible.
I haven’t stopped thinking about the question, and I am not sure that answer was complete. Something closer to, “because I want to burn this whole thing down, and I need more firestarters.”
“I also don’t embrace the concept of “should.” I believe we “get to” do things, we choose. There’s no joy in people “should-ing” all over themselves.”
