“Why are you doing this?” someone asked me today, at the beginning of our conversation. “Why are you reviewing people’s resumes for free?” Suspicion, sure. Merited, sure.
I thought about the question, and then I gave a good enough answer – it is important to me that the media and tech ecosystems become less homogeneous; it is easier for me as a hiring manager if more people who I might otherwise miss make themselves visible.
I haven’t stopped thinking about the question, and I am not sure that answer was complete. Something closer to, “because I want to burn this whole thing down, and I need more firestarters.”
“I also don’t embrace the concept of “should.” I believe we “get to” do things, we choose. There’s no joy in people “should-ing” all over themselves.”
