the open borders of the self

2026-09-27

I am (briefly) on the African continent; the last time was eleven years ago.

(As an aside: who remembers “quantified self”? It was the best of times, it was the time of index cards and lifehacker)

Here for a conference; grateful for the opportunity to be having very different kinds of conversations from very different frames of reference than the ones to which I am normally (over)exposed.

Also grateful for anytime I can see water from where I am, even if it is not Caribbean ocean blue.

The greens are mostly a golf course, but I’m just here for the view.

Realizing again how important it is to me to get to be in markets and countries that we like to call ‘emerging’. Especially right now.

I feel most myself in places that remind me of where I’m from without seeking to do so because they intend to send me back there.

The delay in the call is one beat too long,
enough to jerk apart the words.
Is that you? Where are you now?

She hears the voices she has left and realizes,
where she is going she knows no one.
As the phone card marks the passing of silence,
she sinks to the floor
through the open borders of the self
